Overview

The overwhelming majority of Americans (92%) use multiple platforms to
get their daily news, according to a new survey conducted jointly by
the Pew Research Center’s Internet &amp; American Life Project and Project
for Excellence in Journalism.

The internet is now the third most-popular news platform, behind local
and national television news and ahead of national print newspapers,
local print newspapers and radio. Getting news online fits into a
broad pattern of news consumption by Americans; six in ten (59%) get
news from a combination of online and offline sources on a typical
day.

The internet and mobile technologies are at the center of the story of
how people’s relationship to news is changing. In today’s new
multi-platform media environment, news is becoming portable,
personalized, and participatory:

    * Portable: 33% of cell phone owners now access news on their cell phones.
    * Personalized: 28% of internet users have customized their home
page to include news from sources and on topics that particularly
interest them.
    * Participatory: 37% of internet users have contributed to the
creation of news, commented about it, or disseminated it via postings
on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter.

In addition, people use their social networks and social networking
technology to filter, assess, and react to news. And they use
traditional email and other tools to swap stories and comment on them.
Among those who get news online, 75% get news forwarded through email
or posts on social networking sites and 52% share links to news with
others via those means.

Despite all of this online activity, the typical online news consumer
routinely uses just a handful of news sites and does not have a
particular favorite. And overall, Americans have mixed feelings about
this “new” news environment. Over half (55%) say it is easier to keep
up with news and information today than it was five years ago, but 70%
feel the amount of news and information available from different
sources is overwhelming.

          <pre>Sree,
Different stokes for different folks... Welcome to the world of software
where personalization is the key to success since virtually no single
solution will solve everyone's needs...

Your proposal that services not send out "Spoiler Alerts" whose subject
lines reveal their content would probably be appreciated by most, but not
all, people who expect to actually watch the events. However, for those who
don't expect to watch the events, a spoiler alert is often exactly what they
are looking for and is generally more efficient and effective. (They aren't
forced to open an alert to discover the urgently forwarded information. They
can get the gist of current events simply by scanning the subject lines
which summarize their alerts...)

Personally, I really don't like alerting systems that don't maximize their
use of the subject line. In cases where I don't want a spoiler, I simply
don't sign up for alerts. Like you, I am a user of WSJ alerts. However, it
really irritates me that they, like many other similar services, start all
their subject lines with "WSJ News Alert: ". I consider that attribution
text to be selfishly wasted space since it largely duplicates the "sender
name" which is already displayed to me. (It is "selfish" since it is
probably intended to serve the WSJ's needs for branding more than it is
intended to serve my needs for information...) These prefixed attributions
also often push the meat of the subject so far to the right that interesting
information is clipped. (This is particularly the case on smaller mobile
devices.)
The subject I would want for your example alert would be something like:
"Bode Miller wins Gold: WSJ News Alert".

What would be <strong>*best*</strong> in this case would be offering users a choice --
provide personalization. Offer to give them alerts either with meaningless
subjects or with information rich subject lines. You would find users who
will passionately argue for each of these approaches. No one system will
satisfy everyone...

Damn. KPaul, I am now officially scared shitless, since next week I will
officially be the editor of <a href="http://thebradentontimes.com">http://thebradentontimes.com</a> - doing almost
exactly the same work you're doing except with the advantage of a
rich-guy publisher backing the thing and building an ad sales force
while I worry about nothing but content.

Anyway, I will be following in your footsteps, complete with camcorder
and shotgun mic at meetings and news conferences.

I've theorized about and discussed and followed small-time local online
news operations like yours for over a decade, but now I'm in the thick
of the thing and I hope I have enough stamina to build what I think our
community needs in the way of a "dialog, not monologue" news medium.

I also hope I'm right in my estimation of what people around here <strong>*need*</strong>
and <strong>*want*</strong>, which are not necessarily the same things.

One thought that gives me hope is that both local paperlets are chain
operations, as bland as a chain restaurant like Pizza Hut, while we're
the equivalent of the much more flavorful Joey D's Pizza down the street
from my home, and I take heart in the fact that Joey D's is almost
always busier than Pizza Slut.

Anyway, I will take all the advice I can get from any of you. I'll be
making just enough money to support a single-wide trailer lifestyle,
which is okay since my wife and I aren't pretentious enough to need a
double-wide, if you know what I mean.

Not kidding about the trailer thing, BTW. I live in (and am now on the
board of directors of) the 680+ unit Fair Lane Acres mobile home
community, right across Tamiami Trail from the Bradenton Hooters. Since
I'll mostly work from my home office, this is an experiment in true
trailer trash journalism (except, of course, that nowadays we like to be
called "manufactured housing recyclables," not "trailer trash.")

We'll see what kind of semi-citjourn writers I can attract for the
munificent sum of $20/story, and if I can get the only other staff
writer, Erica Newport, to cover anything besides arts, culture, and
other soft feature stuff.

Ah, well.

Wish me luck. I'm going to need it.

<a href="http://thebradentontimes.com">http://thebradentontimes.com</a> -- Last week the one staff reporter told me
the editor gave notice. I called the publisher/owner and he hired me on
the spot, starting March 1.

People I know, money behind it, a decent sales rep out on the streets,
30K subscribers to the weekly "update" email. The owner's a County
Commissioner and rather large local rental property owner (we don't call
them slumlords here; they're "real etate investors") and sailboat freak.

He and I already knew and liked each other. He didn't hire me when he
started his little venture because he didn't think I was interested in
the salary he could afford.

Hey! It's more than Wal~Mart or unemployment. And I still can and will
do music and commercial video work on the side, although I will now be a
lot pickier about which clients I take on.

So we'll see. Am I capable of driving a low-budget Web site into
profitability?

Well know in a year or so.

TEXT of AP story:

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — An Olympic official with direct knowledge of
the situation says a men's luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia has
died after a crash during training.
The official tells The Associated Press that the International Olympic
Committee received confirmation of Nodar Kumaritashvili's death. The official
spoke on condition of anonymity because the 21-year-old luger's family hadn't
been notified yet.
An official statement is to be released soon.
Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled near the finish Friday, went over the
track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler
Sliding Center.

I may be working with the local dudes who put out
<a href="http://thebradentomtimes.com">http://thebradentomtimes.com</a> &amp; I've already suggested community-building
parties. I mean like at local bars and coffee houses, with music.
Meetup-type things where humans meet face to face.

Most of my long-term online relationships are with people I know in
person, and I believe the same holds true for a lot of people (hi, Gene
Gaines! - we reconnected after many years right here on this email list)
so why not use that fact to build a local community?

Our local chain-owned newspaperlets do nothing like this. Offering
something they don't -- in this case, sponsored parties -- is a great
way to set The Bradenton Times apart from other local media. Might be
fun, too, and fun never hurts! :)
