Subject: Involve and CLG launch the 'Community Power Pack'
Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2008 09:56:33 +0100
From: Edward Andersson <edward@involve.org.uk>
Dear network members,
Involve is proud to announce the launch of the 'Community Power Pack'
<http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/communities/powerpack>; a
document that Involve has developed for Communities and Local Government
(CLG).
The 'Community Power Pack' contains all the information you need to run
a participative event on Empowerment. It follows Communities Secretary
Hazel Blears’ announcement of a new Empowerment White Paper. It is
aimed at groups who wouldn't normally take part to let their views and
experiences be known; and as a result we have made the pack as practical
and easy to use as possible.
The pack contains suggestions on how to run an event, with advice for
facilitators and organisers as well as detailed information about
empowerment issues. It also poses some questions around empowerment
issues that CLG would like to hear your views on. The results of the
events will feed into the development of the upcoming Community
Empowerment White paper.
For more information please visit the CLG website
<http://www.communities.gov.uk/communities/communityempowerment/unlockingthetalent/>,
where you can read the White Paper launch document
<http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/communities/pdf/712089>.
Alternatively please email <email obscured>
<mailto:unlockingTalent@communities.gsi.gov.uk> for more information.
Involve will be updating the pack based on user feedback and we welcome
any thoughts you might have on it. Please send your practical thoughts
and ideas on teh pack to <email obscured>
<mailto:edward@involve.org.uk>
Best Wishes,
Edward

It's an interesting attempt and there is some good stuff in there - but why
the PDF and (AAARGH!) Word document approach? Why not just do it online?

Followed the links innit to people and participation and its telling me this ..
However blogs that are branded for particular organisations and that rely on
paid staff to update them can cost several thousand pounds to run annually.

Hi Edward
Personally I wouldn't rely on the Ministry if I were you - I just asked
because there doesn't seem to be any link to it on the White Paper
section of the CLG website. I'd suggest trying to get this information
out on council websites (I'll put the announcement in our newsletter
tomorrow which will hit every local authority)
Cheers

Hi Paul,
I take your point, perhaps that section is a bit too discouraging.
The aim of the listing on peopleandparticipation isn't to discourage
councils or other public bodies from setting up blogs but to make sure
that they don't forget that someone needs to maintain them and if this
person is doing so during working hours it comes with a certain cost.
If you can think of a better way of getting that point across let me
know and I'll amend the description. Alternatively you can also leave a
comment on the site to let us know what we've got wrong. As far as I'm
concerned peopleandparticipation.net really benefits from the experience
of practitioners like yourself.
Best Wishes,
Edward

As Bing Crosby would put it 'accentuate the positive'.
something like ...
'Blogs are great tools for getting people involved with what you're doing but
remember that someone has to update them, this takes someone's time and you
musn't forget that this does mean some sort of cost to their time and has to be
in any sort of budget. though also remember that blogs can have positive
effects in pointing to savings elsewhere - that's another reason for doing
blogs. don't let the cost get in the way but don't ignore it either. there are
lots of resources - see BLAH - which can help bloggers manage the time
commitment'
Even mentioning 'thousands' is a tad off putting. not saying to not tell people
the reality, just follow Bing's lead ...

Hi Paul,
Good point. I'll follow Bing's lead on this and redraft the section.
Let me know if you find other sections that could do with a rewrite...
